Drama Serie Review
The concept of "the lockdown thriller" feels like a relic of 2020, yet *56 Days* attempts to revitalize the subgenre by blending claustrophobic romance with a cold-case procedural. Set against the ticking clock of a burgeoning relationship and an eventual crime scene, the series tries to bridge the gap between a steamy romantic drama and a gritty mystery. While the ambition is evident, the execution often feels like a puzzle with several missing pieces.
The show’s primary strength lies in its dual-timeline structure. Watching Detectives Lee Reardon (Dorian Missick) and Karl Connolly reconstruct the timeline through the debris of a luxury apartment provides a satisfying, forensic rhythm to the storytelling. Missick, in particular, grounds the show with a weary, grounded performance that offsets the heightened melodrama of the flashbacks. As Oliver and Ciara, Avan Jogia and Dove Cameron possess undeniable chemistry, effectively capturing the frenetic, "instant-connection" energy that defines their ill-fated 56-day arc. The cinematography utilizes the confined space of the apartment well, shifting from a warm, golden intimacy to a sterile, haunting coldness as the mystery deepens.
However, the series falters in its pacing and tonal consistency. At eight episodes, the narrative feels stretched thin; the middle chapters lean heavily on repetitive "will-they-won't-they" tropes that stall the momentum of the central investigation. While Karla Souza delivers a sharp performance, her character feels underutilized, often relegated to providing exposition rather than driving the plot. The biggest hurdle is the script’s reliance on the "unreliable narrator" trope, which by 2026 feels somewhat exhausted. Instead of genuine shocks, many of the twists feel engineered for shock value rather than organic character development.
Ultimately, *56 Days* is a stylish but shallow exercise in suspense. It succeeds as a showcase for its young leads, but as a crime drama, it lacks the narrative weight to leave a lasting impression. It is a serviceable binge for fans of the cast, but those seeking a groundbreaking mystery will find the payoff doesn't quite justify the two-month journey.
